Sidmouth is one of East Devon's most beautiful towns, a Regency gem nestled between the dramatic red Triassic cliffs of Peak Hill and Salcombe Hill on the Jurassic Coast. With a population of around 13,000 and a large conservation area protecting its elegant Georgian and Victorian architecture, Sidmouth is a town that takes real pride in its appearance, and that extends to its gardens.
As your local Sidmouth gardener, I provide regular maintenance and one-off services across the town and the wider Sid Valley. The elegant Regency heart of Sidmouth, where many properties have surprisingly generous gardens behind their seafront facades. Gardens here are sheltered by the town but exposed to salt-laden south-westerly winds. Planting needs to be tough on the seaward side but can be more adventurous in sheltered corners. The mild microclimate means tender plants like agapanthus, echium and even some palms thrive in south-facing spots. Many of these gardens are in the conservation area, so they benefit from sensitive, knowledgeable maintenance rather than heavy-handed treatment.
The eastern side of town climbs towards Salcombe Hill, with residential streets offering a mix of Victorian villas and more modern housing. Gardens here tend to be on sloping ground with good drainage. The Fortfield area around the cricket ground has some of Sidmouth's most substantial properties with large, mature gardens. Established specimen trees, herbaceous borders and formal lawns are common and need experienced seasonal care.
A residential area to the north of the town centre, straddling the Woolbrook stream. A mix of housing styles from Victorian cottages to 1960s and 70s developments. Gardens are typically medium-sized family plots. The soil here starts to get heavier as you move away from the coast, with more clay content than the sandy soil near the seafront. Regular mulching and soil improvement makes a real difference.
The Sid Valley villages a mile or two north of Sidmouth. Sidford sits at the junction of the A3052 and A375, while Sidbury is a picturesque village further up the valley with a church dating back to Saxon times. Gardens here are properly inland with heavier clay soil, more shelter from coastal wind, but more frost risk in winter. Cottage gardens, vegetable patches and larger rural plots are typical.
A beautiful clifftop village east of Sidmouth with a Norman church and stunning coastal views. Gardens here are exposed to the full force of the prevailing winds and salt spray. Planting needs to be carefully chosen for resilience. The red Triassic soil is well-drained but thin on the cliff edges. This is where my local knowledge of what actually survives on the East Devon coast really counts.
