What Does a Typical Visit Look Like?
For a typical small to medium domestic lawn, a full mow, edge and tidy takes about an hour. That includes mowing the lawn at the right height for the season, cutting clean edges along all borders, paths and driveways, and clearing up afterwards. Green waste is removed as standard and included in the price.
For larger lawns, it is more practical to use a petrol mower. Battery tools are brilliant for the majority of domestic gardens, but there is a point where a bigger lawn simply needs a bigger machine to get the job done efficiently. I will always use the right tool for the job and I will be upfront about which approach suits your garden when I come to quote.

My Approach to Lawn Care
I take an organic, common-sense approach to lawn health that works with nature rather than throwing chemicals at problems:
- Mowing at the right height: I adjust the cut through the seasons. Higher in summer to shade roots and hold moisture. Lower in spring and autumn to encourage dense, thick growth. Never scalped, which is what invites moss and weeds in
- Clean edging every visit: a crisp edge along borders, paths and driveways makes the whole garden look sharper instantly
- Organic feeding: natural lawn feed in spring and autumn. No synthetic fertilisers that produce a flush of soft growth followed by a crash
- Scarifying: removing the thatch layer of dead grass that builds up and suffocates the lawn. Best done in autumn when the grass can recover quickly
- Aeration: forking or hollow-tining to relieve compaction, especially important on East Devon's heavier clay soils inland
- Overseeding bare patches: filling thin or bare areas with appropriate grass seed rather than accepting bare earth that will just fill with weeds
- No chemical moss treatment: moss is a symptom of poor drainage, shade or compaction. I address the cause through scarifying and aeration rather than masking it with iron sulphate that kills the moss but leaves the problem underneath
Lawn Care for East Devon's Different Soils
A healthy Devon lawn maintained with organic methods — it starts with understanding your soil
East Devon has two quite different soil types, and your lawn care needs to account for whichever one you are on:
Sandy Soil (Coastal: Exmouth, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Beer)
Sandy soil drains fast and warms up quickly in spring, which means your lawn starts growing earlier in the year. The downside is that it dries out fast in summer and nutrients wash through quickly. Organic feeding and mulching work better than synthetic quick-release fertilisers because they release nutrients slowly and improve the soil structure over time. I mow slightly higher on sandy soil in summer to help shade the roots and retain moisture.
Clay Soil (Inland: Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Axminster, Colyton)
East Devon's red clay is heavy, slow to drain and can waterlog in winter. Lawns on clay are prone to compaction, moss and poor drainage. The good news is that clay holds nutrients brilliantly once you improve the structure. Regular aeration, scarifying and top-dressing with organic compost gradually transforms heavy clay into productive soil. Liquid seaweed feed works better than granular products on clay because it gets absorbed more readily. I avoid mowing when the ground is waterlogged as it compacts the surface further and damages the turf.
